Firm of Whiteway and Ball

Whiteway and Ball operated as coal merchants and ship owners in Torquay, Devon. The original partners were William Whiteway born 1799 and his brother-in-law William Ball who had married Elizabeth Whiteway. William and Elizabeth Whiteway's father was Mark Whiteway, master mariner, who was born in Shaldon, Devon in 1765 and was still alive in 1851 at age 85.

In 1851 the firm was operating at 2 Montpelier Place, Tormoham but William Ball had died.

The 1856 Kelly Directory shows the firm also acted as insurance agents for Royal Exchange and did business at 1 North Quay, Torquay as well as at Montpelier Place .

The 1881 census shows William Ball, son of William Ball and Elizabeth Whiteway, as a merchant ship owner. He was living at Walmer House, Tormaham with his wife, 6 children and 3 servants. Another son Mark Whiteway Ball, 13, was away at Queens School, Basingstoke, Hampshire.

In the 1891 census William Ball was still living at Walmer House. His son Mark W Ball, now 23, was also there and was listed as a merchant ship owner. Eldest son also named William Ball, age 31, was married with 2 children and 3 servants living at Maycliffe, St Lukes Road, Tormoham and his occupation was Steamship Owner.

A 1911 Torquay trade directory shows Whiteway and Ball as coal merchants on Vaughan Road and ship owners at 1 North Quay.

Today Walmer House is owned by the KeyChange Charity

Will of Henry Adams, Died 1870

The last codicil of the will of Henry Adams was made 9 January 1869 to make provision for the education of the children of his nephew Charles Beer. Beer and Love Whiteway Bowden had 2 sons. Charles Beer and his brother Henry were master mariners; his 3 sisters married mariners but his 2 sons broke the seafaring tradition by becoming a baker and a school teacher.

St Paul's Hammersmith

James William King and Sarah Jane Peirce married Christmas Day, 1881 at St Paul's Church, Hammersmith. The church today was completed in 1883. The old church was on the same site and continued to be used while the new church was built around it.

Jane Whiteway

Jane Whiteway (1834-1897) was born in Shaldon, Devon. She married Henry Winsborrow, also born in Devon, probably at the St Nicholas Church, Ringmore, Devon in 1852. She and her husband moved to London before 1856 where her 6 children were born.

Her husband, children and grandchildren may be in the 1900 wedding photo of her niece Hersillia Kate Whiteway. The wedding took place in Hackney and Jane Whiteway's family were living in West Ham. The groom's family also were living in West Ham.

Sarah Jane Peirce

In 1881 Sarah Jane Peirce was 20 and a seamstress. She was living at 85 Hudson Road, Plumstead with her parents Robert Peirce and Ann Peirce (nee Jones) and brothers John william, 17; Robert, 15; James w, 13; Henry Warren L, 6. All the children were born in Plumstead, Kent.

Until 1868 Plumstead was part of the Lewisham district, then in 1868 in became part of the new district of Woolwich. In 1889 it became part of London.

John Churchill and Mary Ann Finch

A website showing the descendents of John Churchill (1819-1882) and Mary Ann Finch (1818-1895) is at churchill.50webs.com. Their daughter Sarah Jane Amy Churchill (1848-1917) married John Whiteway (1850-1910) on 28 August 1871.

John Whiteway was 2nd cousin to Henry Whiteway (1808-1857) who was a pilot that drowned off Teignmouth, Devon.
